This agency was established under the New Economic Measures Law of May 15, 2001. It is the outcome of a government policy implemented in the late 1960's, when France adopted a favorable and constructive approach toward inward international investment. At that time, DATAR - the French Government body in charge of regional development - broke new grounds and created a network of marketing offices to attract international investment to the various regions of its territory.

New York City was selected as home to the first overseas DATAR branch in the fall of 1969. The opening of the Frankfurt, Germany office took place the following year, while a consultant was retained in Tokyo to cover Japan. In 1972, European posts were inaugurated in London, Stockholm and Zurich and the U.S. presence was reinforced by the creation of facilities in Chicago and Los Angeles. The Madrid branch was inaugurated in 1973 to assist the Spanish corporate community. The government's commitment did not slow down during the following decades: 1981 saw the creation of an office in Tokyo to cover not only Japan but all of Asia, a fourth U.S. office opened up in Houston, Texas two years later, the Brussels and Milan branches started operations in 1991.

Today, a total of 17 bureaus - four in North America, eight in Europe and five in Asia - share the mission to promote France as a successful base for corporate growth and profits. Under the name Invest in France Agency (IFA), they provide international investors with complimentary, one-on-one service customized to their specific needs.
